Vincent Lacour: a new name in Touraine (Saint-Georges-sur-Cher)

 Vincent Lacour

 Approach to the new winery

Inside the spacious and gravity-fed winery

Just over a week ago I visited Vincent Lacour in Vrigny, Saint-Georges-sur-Cher. I had met his partner Raechel Waugh in London in January at the French Wine Discoveries tasting at Tobacco Dock. I had been surprised to discover Vincent Lacour's wines as he and his 26 hectare domaine is only four or five kilometres away from Epeigné-les-Bois.  Furthermore I often cycle through the hamlet of Vrigny.

There is, however, an explanation for this apparent oversight. Although the family has been involved in growing grapes and making wine for 100 years, they have also sold through the local négoce. Vincent only started bottling and selling his own wine in 2013. Vincent and Raechel recognise that it will take time for Domaine Lacour to become established. The majority of their wine will continue to be sold to négociants.

When Vincent, who is a qualified winemaker, started in 2003, they were still making wine in very cramped and difficult conditions in sheds attached to his grandfather's house. So cramped and difficult were the 'facilities' that Raechel told me that Vincent lost at least eight kilos during a harvest – and he is already pretty trim!

In 2010 Vincent opened a new, spacious and practical winery in the Vrigny's Voie Romaine.

Eight hectares of the domaine's 26 hectares are planted with Sauvignon Blanc, 8 of Gamay, 3.5 Grolleau, 3 Cabernet Franc and 4 Chenin.

For the moment Vincent has three wines – a clean and precise Crémant de Loire (7€ – at domaine) made from Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay that spends 12 months on its lees for the moment, though the intention is for the Crémant to spend much more on its lees in the future. There is a rosé (5.25€) made from 90% Gamay 10% Cabernet Franc.

Then there is the Sauvignon Blanc – I was particularly impressive by the delicious 2014, which is a bargain when bought from the domaine at 6€. This Sauvignon is made in a nicely ripe style, very clean and well balanced. I plan to buy some when I am back in the Loire at the end of May.

Launch of Dames de Coeur de Loire

 Catherine Corbeau-Mellot
(Joseph Mellot).
leading contact for

Press release on launch:

 Jacques Couly

Very shocked and sorry to hear this evening of the death of Jacques Couly, the PDG of Couly-Dutheil – one of Chinon's largest producers – during the night of Friday/Saturday morning. He was 74. Jacques was not only a major figure in Chinon but also in Loire wine.

It was very sad that his later years saw a bitter split with his elder brother Pierre Couly.

I will long remember Jacques for his enthusiasm, his kindness and his engaging smile.

Our thoughts and condolences to Françoise (his wife), Arnaud, Jacques' son, Marie-Madeleine, Arnaud's wife and the rest of the family and the team at Couly-Dutheil.

The funeral will be held on Friday April 01st  at 2.30 pm in St Etienne Church, Chinon. In accordance with Jacques's wishes a glass of friendship will be offered after the ceremony at the Couly Dutheil winery ( 12 Rue Diderot – Chinon).

Two fine meals in 24 hours – Le Pot de Lapin (Saumur) – part 2

Olivier Thibault

Unlike Le Clos de Jeanne, a new discovery, Olivier Thibault's Le Pot de Lapin is an old favourite, so it was a pleasure to return there for lunch last Thursday. A special pleasure as the cooking was particularly assured on this visit

From the fine wine list, which naturally features plenty of Saumur-Champignys and Saumurs, we chose a spring cuvée – 2015 Terres Rouges, Saumur-Champigny, Domaine de Saint-Just made by Arnaud Lambert. It was deliciously seductive with soft black fruits. Dangerously easy to drink at lunchtime!

Future AOC Amboise

Château d'Amboise

In February 2016 the INAO approved the creation of AOC Amboise – a redefinition and narrowing of AOC Touraine-Amboise. The red will be 100% Côt (Malbec), the white 100% Chenin and the rosé – a minimum of 70% Côt and a maximum of 30% Gamay. The Cuvée François 1, a blend of Gamay, Côt and Cabernet Franc and included in the existing Touraine-Amboise AC, is not included in the new appellation.

The new AOC will involve some 20 producers and the first vintage is expected to be 2017.

Details from a press invitation:
